Writer's Guidelines

 
  • Purpose Of The HIV Nutrition Update
The HIV Nutrition Update (hereafter known as the Update) is a quarterly peer-reviewed newszine available to nutrition professionals and others interested in nutrition, HIV/AIDS, and related issues. First published on July 1, 1996 as the HIV ReSource Review, the Update provides important, time-saving, and cutting- edge information. It offers original research and comprehensive literature reviews. The Update helps people interested in HIV nutrition to sort through the increasing research on nutrition and acquire the resources needed to counsel HIV-positive people effectively. The Update encourages submissions from nutrition professionals and other health care professionals who work with the HIV population.

  • Please be aware that the Update strives to provide comprehensive, unbiased and objective information. Writer's are expected to disclose any financial or commercial arrangements related to the subject matter of the article being submitted.
     
  • Update's Aim And Contributions
  • The Update's aim is to increase exposure to cutting-edge information in an unbiased manner. The Update invites contributions in the form of Original Research, Literature Reviews, Philosophical Articles, Content Articles, Clinical Application Articles, Book Reviews and Letters to the Editor.
     
    • Types Of Manuscripts

    •        Book Reviews: Reviews of books that highlight nutrition, HIV, complementary therapies or other issues related to the field of HIV nutrition are accepted to share valuable information  with the nutrition professional. Book Reviews may NOT be writen by the book's author.
       

      Letters to the Editor: Letters to the Editors are accepted to discuss, refute, or challenge items identified in a previously published Update article. Prior to publication, the corresponding author of the article in question will have an opportunity to respond to the points identified in the letter.

       
      Philosophical: Articles that address philosophical or theoretical issues related to nutritional services such as policy development or issues related to the role of nutritional services within the health care system.

       
      Clinical Applications: Articles that highlight or evaluate nutritional programs, note practical ideas that nutrition professionals have experienced in the workplace or review case studies or community health efforts. This may or may not note research efforts of the author(s).

       
      Content: Comprehensive reviews of the latest findings on the value of nutritional services in HIV disease, various medications for treating HIV, overview of various nutrients that may be helpful to HIV-positive people, alternative treatment reviews, or information on nutrition education and counseling programs.

       
      Literature Reviews: Comprehensive reviews of complementary treatments or specific nutritional services are especially desired.

       
      Dissertations related to HIV- specific nutritional services or issues related to nutrition are invited. Doctoral students seeking publishing avenues to share their knowledge in this field are strongly encouraged to submit a copy of their dissertation for publication. 
     
    • Manuscript Format

    • Cover Letter: Identify author and relationship to subject matter. Unless noted otherwise, the Update editorial board will assume that manuscripts submitted for review have not been previously published. If applicable, please state any previous publication of submitted article by noting the publication and date of distribution. Include the corresponding author's e-mail address.

       
      Copy Format: Submissions must include a title page; listing of authors; their degrees and organization affiliation; their e-mail address, fax and phone numbers. Abbreviations should be defined at their first use and preceded by the words for which they stand. Manuscripts should be on one side of 8 ½" x 11" white paper, double-spaced and from 3-10 pages in length. They must be numbered consecutively in the upper right hand corner and font should be no smaller than 12 points. 

       
      Number references in order as used and list them at the end of the article. List all authors when there are five or less; when there are six or more, list the first four, then "et al." 

       
      All tables should be created using the table function within a word processing system such as Microsoft Word or Word Perfect. Tables should be placed along with manuscript text closest to the area in which they are noted.

       
      Definitions should be included for all words that may require explanation.


             Acknowledgments: Acknowledgments should be placed before the references in a section at the end of the text.
       

      Abstract: A short, succinct abstract, of less than 70 words, should consist of no more than two paragraphs. Do not cite references in the abstract. Writers should include three key words at the bottom of the abstract.

       
      Copies: Submissions may be by way of e-mail as an attachment or through USPS first class mail. Submission of both two hard copies and a compact disk (CD) copy of the manuscript is required if it is sent via USPS first class mail.
     
    • Review Process

    • All manuscripts are acknowledged upon receipt and first reviewed by a member of the HIV Nutrition Update Editorial Board. To meet our goal of providing timely information, manuscripts are then reviewed by a minimum of three editors who receive electronically transmitted copies. Reviewers return the manuscript to the Editor-In-Chief with their recommendations. The final decision to publish, along with the comments from reviewers, if any, is then forwarded to the authors by e-mail. Manuscripts accepted for publication may be revised to meet the standards and format of the Update. For those manuscripts not accepted for publication, one copy of the manuscript will be returned.

       
      Authors of an accepted manuscript will receive a complimentary one-year Internet subscription including all issues to date. The complimentary subscription includes both PDF and HTML files for easy printing and linking to outside web sites. Authors also receive recognition in the preview section of the newszine web page.

       
      The corresponding author will be responsible for approving the final article copy prior to publication.
