Lifestyle Habits
  • A healthful eating plan and other healthy lifestyle habits such as regular physical activity are strongly recommended for the general population. They should be stressed even more so for people with HIV. With no other medical issues, meal plans should be rich in whole fruits and vegetables, whole grains, fish, and lean sources of other proteins with an emphasis on plant based protein such as legumes. Meal plans low in saturated fats and moderate in both polyunsaturated (fatty fish, flaxseed, flax oil, etc.) and monounsaturated fats ( some nuts, olives, olive oil, sesame seeds, etc.) are strongly encouraged. Reducing sodium intake may be beneficial as well. Eating processed foods including so-called 'fast foods' and convenience foods, low fiber grains, and sugary beverages are discouraged as is smoking. A general multivitamin/mineral combination (without iron) may be helpful. This eating plan may also help with lipoatrophy and lipodystrophy. It is basically the Mediterranean diet that the currently popular South Beach Diet is modeled after.
