Our view of the universe is shaped by the knowledge we have about its people and daily events. The recent tsunami caused more than 289,000 deaths. It affected more than 11 nations ranging from Africa, India and Indonesia to Florida in the U.S. where the aquifer rose up to four inches. This issue begins our inclusion of International views on the various concerns of HIV disease.

Many Americans are faced with daily struggles to secure safe and adequate foodstuffs. These concerns are much worse in nations such as India and Africa where the incidence of HIV disease is much higher and resources are extremely limited. Articles in this issue highlight the need for adequate and safe food and water besides access to treatments for HIV disease.

Information on a new combination drug (Epzicom) used in the U.S. to treat HIV infection or AIDS contrasts original research done in Africa on the use of dietary algae to lessen disease progression. This issue also highlights a recently developed nutritional services program offered at the Jeffery Goodman Special Care Clinic in Los Angeles, CA. Leads to additional information and resources on HIV nutrition and upcoming conferences help clinicians to keep current in the field of HIV nutrition.

In this issue, we also welcome another HIV-savvy editor. Heidi Lichtner, RD, MA, LDN works at the Jemsek clinic in Huntersville, NC (review clinic information in the July/Aug 2001 HIV Nutrition Update issue). Heidi is an active member of the American Dietetic Association's HIV/AIDS Dietetic Practice Group (DPG #29) and supports RAIN (Regional AIDS Interfaith Network) in Charlotte, NC.
