Adverse
Reactions (continued)
-
Lactic acidosis with increased
liver size.
-
Epzicom can worsen Hepatitis
B infection.
-
Lipodystrophy (lipoatrophy:
decreased fat in legs, arms, face and buttocks and lipoaccumulation: increased
{brown} fat on the upper back, in the abdomen and sometimes chest {gynecomastia}).
While Lipodystrophy has been seen when lamivudine and abacavir were used
as part of combination regimens, it is believed that lamivudine and abacavir
contribute very little to the fat redistribution.
-
Other side effects can include
abnormal dreams, anorexia, anxiety, cough, chills, diarrhea, dizziness,
dyspnea, fatigue, headaches, mild nausea, muscle aches, stomach pain,
tachycardia, and vomiting.
|
|
|
Contraindications
-
Hypersensitivity reaction
or serious allergic reaction to abacavir. If a reaction occurs, patients
must stop taking the medication immediately and not restart it without
their doctor’s approval.
-
Liver problems or hepatitis
B infection.
-
Pregnancy or breastfeeding
patients or patients planning to be pregnant.
