Dietary Intervention: Effects On Triglycerides
In HIV Lipodystrophy

The Diet Study is a diet intervention for HIV-infected individuals with elevated triglycerides and/or insulin resistance. It is designed to determine the effect of diet on the metabolic changes associated with HIV Lipodystrophy. 

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Triglyceride greater than 150 mg/dL, but less than 550 mg/dL
  • Quantitative insulin sensitivity check (QUICKI) greater than 0.30, but less than 0.35 with fasting glucose less than 120 mg/dL
  • BMI less than 27, but greater than 19
  • Able to participate in a three week intensive nutrition intervention
  • Able to participate in a 10 week diet and follow-up visit schedule
  • Willing to return for a final six month follow-up
  • On stable antiretroviral therapy for more than four weeks
  • No use of omega-3 fatty acid supplements within the last six months
  • No pre- existent treatment of or treatment for diabetes mellitus
  • No pre-existent treatment for lipid disorder
  • No active IV drug use. 


Study Requirements: This study is six months long and includes at least four outpatient visits. Patients in the randomized intervention group must be able to come in to the General Clinical Research Center every week day for three weeks and then come in weekly for the next ten weeks.

Study Benefits:
