HUMAN INTERVENTION STUDIES
WITH CLA
As reviewed in Part I
of this article, there is strong evidence that feeding mixed isomers of
Conjugated Linoleic Acid (CLA) decreases obesity and fat mass in numerous
animal models. Replicating these animal results in clinical intervention
studies has been inconsistent and the data are conflicting. (1)
Editors’ Note
This issue highlights
original research on clinical intervention trials using conjugated linoleic
acid (CLA), N-acetylcysteine, and a patented organic form of chromium in
HIV patients with antiretroviral therapy-associated lipodystrophy.
Patients in this phase I study will help researchers to make a preliminary
assessment of the tolerability, safety and efficacy of BION493, the dietary
supplement noted above. Patients interested in participating in the study
may contact the Research Coordinator, Alan Lee at 212/229-2298 or AlanLeeRD@yahoo.com.
In this issue the Medwatch
column reviews information on Lexiva (fosamprenavir calcium), a prodrug
of Agenerase (generic name, amprenavir. The Update Central column offers
information on vitamins. We highlight the need for them, detrimental effects
and issues related to research efforts. |
