Examining the Role for Conjugated Linoleic Acid in
HIV/AIDS - Part I: In Vitro and Animal Studies

In the wake of this seminal work, 1,086 published studies have since examined CLA’s role in cancer, immune function, oxidative stress, atherosclerosis, lipid and fatty acids metabolism, bone density, obesity, and diabetes (Figure 2 – page three and http://www.wisc.edu/fri/clarefs.htm).

"An average of approximately five CLA research articles are published per week. ."
The scientific interest in CLA has grown exponentially over the last three years. In fact, there were more peer-reviewed publications on CLA in 2003 than in all the years from 1979 to 1998. An average of approximately five CLA research articles are published per week. All of this information should make it a relatively simple matter to understand the role of CLA in human health. In fact, just the opposite is true. At this time, there are numerous apparent inconsistencies in the results of all of this research. The principle reason for this is the number of variables inherent in any single study, making it difficult to compare results from one publication to another.

Experiments can differ (i) in the relative amounts of CLA isomers used, (ii) in the form of the isomer, free fatty acid or triglyceride, (iii) in the model used, in vitro or in vivo, (iv) in the genetics of the cell lines or animals used, and (v) in the subpopulation studied in clinical intervention trials. All of these factors contribute to the difficulty of interpreting the enormous amount of information on CLA. However daunting the task, this article will try to organize and interpret the body of CLA research and present an overview of the potential for CLA supplementation in HIV.
