HIV NUTRITION UPDATE
VOLUME 8, ISSUE 5

(Continued from page 14)

What was the most difficult issue you had to deal with when you started? Issues included: no nutrition education or assessment materials available; growing pains of a new team; and the limited hours each week at the clinic to accomplish the expected goals.

Who is your best ally? The Nurse Practitioner.

Are there any differences in clinical care within your population group? No, all services are offered to each patient regardless of the ability to pay.

What differences exist between your current clientele and that of the HIV-positive person in the early 1980s? Karen states that her only other experience with HIV/AIDS patients was in the early 1980’s as an inpatient Dietitian at a local hospital. During those years, Karen treated mostly men who were in critical condition in the intensive care unit (ICU).

Do you participate regularly in HIV/AIDS networking groups? Not at this time

Is someone involved in program operation also actively involved with your local HIV/AIDS Health Services Planning Council? Yes, the Ryan White Program Coordinator, Nurse Manager, and Medical Director.

What have you found to be most useful in helping to keep up with the current research on nutrition and HIV? Spartanburg Regional Medical Center has a medical library, which Karen uses to access journals to learn about HIV management. She is planning to attend the Association of Nutrition Services Agencies (ANSA) conference this fall to network with fellow Dietitians and learn more about the complexities of HIV and nutrition.
