specific uses of dietary supplements for people with HIV/AIDS on highly-active
antiretroviral therapy (HAART). It reviews dietary supplement use
for general immune functions, HIV/AIDS wasting syndrome, oxidative stress
and mitochondrial toxicity.
For years the medical
community, including physicians and dietitians, have recommended vitamin
and mineral supplements to people with HIV/AIDS (weekly
update archives and Sept/Oct 1996 HIV
ReSource Review).
Editors’ Note
Dietary supplements for
HIV-positive people became more popular in 1991 after Baum and colleagues
reported nutrient abnormalities in early HIV infection that might contribute
to disease progression. This issue’s feature article offers some insight
into why so many clinicians now choose to suggest vitamins, minerals and
other dietary supplements for their patients with HIV infection.
This issue also highlights
a rural AIDS Service Organization in Paducah, KY and the protease inhibitor
Reyataz. Conference news and an update on lipodystrophy is noted as well. |
