Herb Treatment in Chinese Medicine
(Continued from page 11)

There are “Eight Treatment Methods” called “Bian Zheng”, which correlate to the diagnosis of “pattern discrimination”. The methods are: diaphoresis (sweating), emesis (vomiting), purgation, balancing, warming, clearing, elimination, and tonification (strengthening).

Specifically applied to HIV/AIDS, the TCM practitioner must address the two primary healthcare approaches dealing with strengthening the body’s resistance by building the body’s ‘root’ qi and vital substances as well as improving the immune system. The TCM practitioner strives to eliminate the virus and disease side effects such as clearing heat, resolving toxins, invigorating the blood, resolving stagnation, and softening and scattering hard accumulations.

The TCM practitioner views the person as a whole and searches for the underlying causes of the disease imbalances based upon the manifestations. The practitioner addresses the key primary organo-systems that produce, move and metabolize all fluids namely Lung, Spleen and Kidney and seeks to build and balance Qi, Blood, Yin and Yang.

In the next TCM article we will discuss Chinese herbal formulas in application for various pattern or disease diagnoses. In allopathic medicine the overall condition is referred to as HIV/AIDS whereas in TCM the patterns of symptoms carry specific designations that clearly points to the organo-systems or functions that are dis-at-ease and the optimal resolution. Example: If the TCM symptom pattern shows a ‘wasting’ syndrome or ‘ease to diarrhea’, the organo system called Spleen would be deficient in certain energy and holding function and the aim would be to tonify that system with specific herbal formulations.
