God’s Love We Deliver (GLWD)

Year Program Started:  The first meal was delivered in August 1985, and the agency was incorporated in April 1986.

Number of Days/Hours on Site: 5 days a week.

Number of Other Program Nutritionists and Status: There are two other GLWD full-time nutritionists, Sonia Grant, MA, RD, CDN and Patricia Slinger, RD, CDN and two part-time nutritionists, Lisa Roth, RD and Lisa Zullig, MS, RD.

Patient Referral Source: hospitals, clinics, day treatment programs, social service programs and self-referral. 

Number of Clients and Population Served: GLWD serves the five boroughs of New York City and Hudson County, NJ.  Last year (1/1/01-12/31/01), this program served an average of 1,882 meals a day to 2,818 clients. Of this total, 49.7% were adult males, 30.8% adult females, and 19.5% children under 20. Additionally, the nutrition department provided 1,406 individual counseling sessions and 366 family counseling sessions.   The ethnic breakdown of the population served is as follows: 48% Black, 33% Latino, 16% White, 3% other. 

Funding Source: Thirty percent of the funding for GLWD comes from Federal (Ryan White Care Act Title I) and New York State grants. The remaining 70% are from corporate and foundation grants, fundraising events, direct mail and bequests.

How often are patients seen?  Meals are delivered to clients daily.

Are all patients screened for nutritional risk? Yes

How often do you provide nutritional assessments and follow-ups? Nutrition assessment is conducted via telephone during the client intake process. Follow-up and education is conducted twice a year or more frequently depending on the situation and medical status of the client. 

Other Provided Nutritional Services: GLWD provides on-site visits, BIA, workshops, nutrition and cooking classes, nutrition support groups and in-house nutrition education. In addition, the Nutrition Department provides between 8-10 free workshops per month to various community organizations. For the 2001 calendar year, the Nutrition Department reached over 1,000 individuals through 80 group nutrition workshops.
