A PILOT INVESTIGATION OF THE MICROBIAL CONTAMINATION OF HERBAL SUPPLEMENTS: IS THERE A RISK FOR IMMUNOCOMPROMISED POPULATIONS?

Individuals with serious illnesses often seek complementary alternative treatment outside of the conventional realm of medical care. For persons living with HIV/AIDS, complementary alternative medicine, including herbal remedies, have become increasing sources of care. In one recent study, it was reported that 22% of patients attending an HIV clinic used medicinal herbs as a form of treatment. (1) Another more recent study indicated that 26% of those patients with HIV used herbal medications; 37% used dietary supplements; and 24% used megavitamins in addition to antiretroviral therapy. (2) Individuals choose to use herbal supplements to support the immune system, to treat or prevent specific opportunistic infections, and to relieve side effects from conventional antiviral medications and opportunistic infections.
