Before or at the sign of weight loss, one should utilize various diagnostics to see if there are any signs of opportunistic infections. Some of these infections might include but are not limited to candidiasis, parasites or mycobacterium avium complex (MAC).

Within the Chinese medical system – ‘wasting’ is a sign of ‘toxic heat’ attacking the digestive function, which is referred to in Chinese medicine as Spleen/Stomach. This ‘dual chakra’ system (as I have seen it to be) is the core of the body’s food processing and thereby the replenishment of the fuel used and ‘to-be-used’. The storage system referred to as the Kidney-system produces the Qi/energy and Blood & body fluids in all of their forms.

‘Toxic-heat’ can inflame the gut disrupting the digestive system and can cause weight loss among other imbalances. One needs to increase caloric and protein intake, resolve any diarrhea and continue to perform a reasonable amount of exercise. All together, these actions can result in an increase of absorption through the small intestines and at the same time stimulate a good appetite, which is of the utmost importance.

There are multiple Chinese Organo-System disharmonies including various infection patterns and all of them need to be addressed. The most vital issue is to insure that digestion does not suffer as it is key to the disruptive patterns that continue to worsen the individual’s overall health.
