"The group plans to evaluate the benefits, risks, limitations and costs of dietary supplements taken by people living with HIV and Hepatitis C. "
Ma Huang
A recent report notes that a herbal source of ephedrine (Ma huang) increases the risk of heart attack, stroke and sudden death even when patients take recommended doses. Ma huang has no scientifically proven benefit and is only one of numerous botanicals that increase the potential for herb-drug interactions. Find more information on the potential for herb-drug interactions in the Jan/Feb and March/April 2001 HIV ReSource Review issues. Readers may also visit the Herb-Drug Interaction Handbook web site.

Supplements Taken By HIV-Positive People
For an inside look at personal accounts from people living with HIV who regularly take dietary supplements visit <http://www.thebody.com/asp/aug01/vergel.html> and <http://www.thebody.com/asp/july01/pujol.html>. It is notable that there are no references given on the research for the supplements taken. The Body offers further information on complementary therapies and HIV.

The Foundation for Integrative AIDS Research (FIAR) is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit designed to conduct clinical studies in the investigation of dietary supplements. The group plans to evaluate the benefits, risks, limitations and costs of dietary supplements taken by people living with HIV and Hepatitis C. For further information visit the FIAR web site or contact FIAR Director, George M. Carter, via email.
