Service Provisions: Laura is on full-time status and on-site five days a week.

Number of Other Program Nutritionists: Molly Lowe, RD, works at the clinic part-time.

Patient Referral Source: Referral sources for the Amelia Court Clinic includes physicians, physician assistants, nurses and self-referrals.

Number of Clients and Population Served: The clinic provides medical and/or psychological care to 3,500 patients, approximately 375 patients per month. Specifically, the RDs see close to 2,600 patients annually. The patient ethnic breakdown includes: Anglo - 43%; African American - 39%; Hispanic -17%; Asian - <1%; American Indian - <1%; Other - <1%.

Funding Source: Ryan White Titles (I, II, III, IV), and the dietary services department.

How often are patients seen? Patients are seen in conjunction with provider appointments. Appointments could range from 1 week to 3 months. Patients can also make appointments with the RD individually, or by provider request.
Are all patients screened for nutritional risk? Yes, all new clinic patients are screened and educated by a RD.

How often do you provide nutritional assessments and follow-ups? Nutritional assessments and follow-ups are dependent on nutritional status, and other issues, which need to be addressed. Patients may be seen weekly, monthly, bimonthly or every 3 months.

Other Provided Nutritional Services: The Amelia Court Clinic provides bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA)  and a quarterly nutrition education periodical. Ms. McCavit coordinates the compassionate use Oxandrin and growth hormone programs. This involves evaluating BIA and coordinating paperwork between the distributing companies and the providers.

Patient Education Materials: Patient education materials include a booklet and various handouts. New patients receive a comprehensive booklet that offers information on food groups and portions, exercise, symptom management and food safety. Handouts include information on: 

  • How to read a food label
  • High protein/calorie containing snacks
  • Lipid profile and heart healthy information
  • Diabetic diets
  • Sodium intake and restriction information
  • Explanation of BIA
