Fish Oil And Heart Disease

As noted in the two part article Have Fat Will Travel (Part One and Part Two) fish oil has been known to decrease high levels of blood fat and to decrease the cytokine tumor necrosis factor alpha. Researchers recently finished two studies on the effect of fish oil in people at risk of heart disease. Study results suggest that fish oil may be helpful in reducing thrombin generation by addressing triglycerol and other coagulation factors.

Preliminary studies noted that type 2 diabetics taking four grams of fish oil per day for two months increased high-density lipoprotein (HDL) and lowered triglycerides and the ratio of low-density lipoproteins (LDL) to HDL.

Polyunsaturated fats such as from fish use up the body's vitamin E in a
dose-dependent manner so vitamin E supplementation is important to consider when using fish oil supplements. It's also notable that fish oil supplements may exacerbate existing low platelet levels and increase the risk of spontaneous bleeding. For recent research news on fish oil, heart disease, and diabetes visit
PubMed Central.

New HIV Tests

A new test to help diagnose HIV-1 infection is now available. It is called
the APTIMA HIV-1 RNA Qualitative Assay and it's made by Gen-Probe Inc.
of San Diego, CA. Approved in October 2006, the test can be used to detect early HIV-1 infection before the appearance of antibodies to HIV-1. Also in October 2006, the FDA granted marketing approval for the PROCLEIX ULTRIO assay. The assay was approved to screen donated blood, plasma, organs and tissue for HIV-1 and hepatitis C virus (HCV) in individual blood donations or in pools of up to 16 blood samples, and to detect the presence of hepatitis B virus (HBV).

Selenium and HIV

New research adds to the wealth of information found in Selenium and HIV/ AIDS by John Babish, PhD. Selenium and HIV/AIDS was published in the March/April 2003 HIV Nutrition Update. Recent research notes that selenium may help to lower levels of HIV in the blood. In the reported study, 260 volunteers took a selenium-enriched yeast named Selenomax. The five-year, double-blind, placebo-controlled study was conducted at the University of Miami and supported by grants from the National Institutes of Health.

Fatty Acids And Heart Disease

Recent information adds to the wealth of knowledge on fatty acids published in various issues of the HIV ReSource Review and HIV Nutrition Update. In the July/Aug 2001 HIV Nutrition Update, Mary Enig, PhD noted that lauric acid, a saturated fatty acid, has antiviral activity and may reduce the viral load in HIV patients.

HIV infection is now commonly associated with an increased risk of heart
disease. As noted in Have Fat Will Travel Part One (by Chester D. Myers, PhD in the HIV ReSource Review Nov/Dec 1998 issue), metabolic disturbances in HIV disease include 'futile cycling' of fatty acids. In 1998, Carr and others noted high cholesterol levels associated with HIV protease inhibitors.

Mujawar and others recently noted that HIV-1 replication depends on cholesterol. These researchers studied the effects of HIV infection on cellular cholesterol metabolism. Study results reveal that HIV infection of macrophages may contribute to increased risk of atherosclerosis in HIV-infected patients.

In the March/April 2004  and the May/June 2004 HIV Nutrition Update, John
Babish PhD discussed Conjugated linoleic acid (CLA), a group of
polyunsaturated fatty acids, and presented an overview of the potential for CLA supplementation in HIV.

HIV Nutrition Handout Number Six

This week the focus is on reproducible handout number six. Resources For
Positive Women is a resource tool for women living with HIV. It may be
downloaded for low literacy readers or for higher reading levels. Version Two uses less black ink during printing. The handout includes a list of books, nutrition resources, web site links and organizations useful for women.

This reproducible tool was last revised in March 2005. To date, the only
information that is no longer available is Numedx Journals and Tufts
University Nutrition Navigator. As noted in the handout, Web Site pages do change and going to the 'root address' of non-working links often leads to the information noted. The Web Site address for Project Inform is the root address. Under the section Online Nutrition Resources, readers may go to the root address of HIVdent and AIDS Project Los Angeles to find the information they seek.

AEGIS is found at two Web Site domain names. For some reason, when checked, the Web Site address for people recently diagnosed did not respond. Information for people recently diagnosed is available at http://www.aegis.org/topics/dayone/. Resources For Positive Women remains a valuable source of information despite these Web Site changes.

These reproducibles may be updated providing a copy of the changes are forwarded to HIV ReSources.
