HIV Prevalence And Diagnosis

The need for increased HIV testing has been a prominent issue for many years due to a variety of reasons. One of them has to do with the estimation of people living with the condition. In 1992, the World Health Organization estimated that by the year 2000 there would be 40 million people testing positive for the virus that causes AIDS. At the end of 2003, an estimated 1,039,000 to 1,185,000 persons in the United States were living with HIV/AIDS, with 24-27% undiagnosed and unaware of their HIV infection.

An estimated 5,000 to 6,000 young persons aged 15 to 24 years acquire HIV each day. The estimate of people living with HIV/AIDS in 2006 is at 39.5 million with the vast majority in sub-Saharan Africa. The range of HIV prevalence is 34.1-47.1 million.

Recently, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced a new
recommendation for routine HIV testing. The recommendation calls for testing patients aged 13-64 years during all health-care visits. Although an issue for numerous reasons, this new recommendation should help with the estimation of HIV prevalence.

Free Access To HIV Nutrition Handouts

HIV ReSources announced the availability of their reproducibles today
through the Internet for no cost. The HIV ReSources Reproducibles are
meant to educate health care providers and clients/patients. These resources were designed using information from cutting edge research articles published in the HIV ReSource Review and HIV Nutrition Update newsletters.

There are two kinds of handouts. Low literacy handouts are for people with a third to sixth grade reading level. The other educational tools are meant to educate health care providers but may be distributed to more educated clients/patients as well.

There are 39 resources available: 18 for low-literacy clients/patients; 18 for more educated clients/patients, clinicians and organizations; and 3 for clinicians and organizations. All of the handouts can be understood better when first reviewed with a nutrition professional.

In order to view the reproducible materials, you must have the Adobe Acrobat Free Reader installed on your computer. To download the Reader for free visit Abode. All of the reproducible PDF files were designed to print out high-quality copies. The first handout in the series may be downloaded for low literacy
readers or for professionals and higher reading levels. To our knowledge, of the resources listed in handout number one, NUMEDX Journals are the only resource not available at this time. This reproducible handout was last revised on March 21, 2005.

As the educational tools were designed with cutting-edge research in mind they remain valuable to people with HIV. If you know of any recent research that affects the reliability of any handout please contact HIV ReSources.

Editors Note: AOL and other subscribers may not be getting their updates
due to web hosting spam blockers and erratic delivery. Unfortunately,
many people who send unwanted email, use the Internet to 'mine' and use
other people's web site domain addresses to send their 'junk mail'
(spam). As many, many, others, our main web site domain address has been
targeted by those who send unwanted mail. Most 'junk mail' is sent from
illegal addresses (such as xyqpsuzy@, etc.) that we do not send our
email with but which includes our main domain name. Also, servers are
now beginning to choose what information gets top priority to get
through the Internet. We never send attachments.

Protein And HIV

Protein needs continue to be a subject of interest based on the number
of search query's done on the HIV ReSources Web Site. Protein guidelines
vary considerably among nutrition professionals and others who seek to
improve the nutritional status of this population group.  Groups such as
the Association of Nutrition Services Agencies are still in the process of trying to develop general protein recommendations for people with HIV. Since
everyone is unique and has different needs it may not be feasible to
count on general recommendations being developed in the near future.

Issue 11 of the HIV ReSource Review notes: "Adequate protein stores are
vital for immune function and good health, especially for individuals
who are challenged by the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)." This
issue's feature article on protein is comprehensive (18 pages) and
formatted online in a PDF document for those interested in learning
about the relationship of protein and HIV. The review serves to provide
useful information on protein needs and recommendations for people
living with HIV and AIDS. Various issues to consider when recommending
increased protein intakes are discussed as well.

View the feature article on protein and HIV. The full newsletter issue is 30 pages and includes a whey protein article. Download it. If you reference any of the articles please credit HIV ReSources in the citation.

WORLD AIDS DAY-CHINA, 2006

Time: Dec.1-3, 2006
Main Conference: Tianjin TEDA Convention Center,China

World Aids Day-China, 2006 (WADC, 2006) was held from December 1-3 in
Tianjin, China. This event was a technological, commonwealth, benevolent campaign as an echo to global anti-HIV/AIDS action.

HIV today is a tremendous threat to men, women and children on all continents around the world. Conference leaders asked that international institutions or organizations extensively engage in more anti-AIDS projects in China and set comprehensive programs on international scientific and technological perspectives by means of the World AIDS Day platform that was promoted by WHO at the AIDS conference. As everyone knows, science and technology play the key roles in control and prevention of the AIDS epidemic. By integrating current global strategies in anti-AIDS fields, such an event may generate a new pathway for our societies to find solutions in fighting the AIDS epidemic and call for global responses to HIV/AIDS.

For information on this extensive program visit the Web Site. Honorary ambassadors were: Dr. Avram Hershko, the Nobel Prize Laureate in Chemistry in 2004; Dr. Rulf M. Zinkernagel, the Nobel Prize Laureate in Medicine in 1996; and Dr. Richard J. Roberts, The Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1993.
