Traditional Chinese Medicine
The Institute of Science
in Society Second International Congress on Acupuncture conference
held in early June 2005 included a session on "Acupuncture, Coherent Energy
and Liquid Crystalline Meridians." Dr. Mae-Wan Ho gave an update on her
theory of the how acupuncture and other forms of subtle energy medicines
work. She noted, "There can be no real progress in conventional healthcare
unless this theory is taken seriously." The full paper on "Acupuncture,
Coherent Energy and Liquid Crystalline Meridians" by Dr. Mae-Wan Ho is
available at the web
site.
Several articles in the HIV Nutrition Update hold information
on Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) practices. TCM includes the meridian
theory, which recognizes Qi as a vital energy circulating in nature and
in our body. Pathogenic changes such as trauma affect Qi causing abnormal
body functions. Numerous articles on HIV/AIDS Treatment in Chinese Medicine,
authored by Senior Editor Richard Allen Freiberg, OMD, NMD, AP - Nationally
Board Certified by AAOMFP, are in various issues of the HIV Nutrition Update.
These include informational TCM pieces on the use of dietary and herbal
treatments, acupuncture, and moxibustion.
Dr. Freiberg continues to educate healthcare professionals
and the general public through the Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine National
Coalition web site (AOMNC), political
efforts related to the healthcare industry, and his articles. The AOMNC
is the largest acupuncture and oriental medicine professional
coalition in the United States. Visit the AOMNC
web site to join the coalition.

Kaiser and MTV Highlight National HIV Testing Day
The Kaiser Family Foundation
and MTV reached out to young people on June 27, 2005 to highlight National
HIV Testing Day. Nationwide complementary activities included on-air, online,
and community efforts to help encourage young people to get tested for
HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) by using the network’s
think: Sexual Health campaign. The collaboration builds on the MTV network’s
nine-year public education partnership with Kaiser, a leader in health
information and research.
"With more than one in two new HIV infections occurring
in this country among people under the age of 25, HIV testing is an important
issue for America’s youth," said Tina Hoff, Vice President and Director
of Entertainment Media Partnerships, Kaiser Family Foundation. "Working
with MTV we can reach young people with the information they need from
a source they trust." Public Service Announcements encouraged viewers to
be tested. All programming directed viewers to MTV
and the campaign hotline number 888/BE SAFE-1 for more information.
For more information on this effort and other ways the
companies are using to promote awareness of HIV and STDs visit MTV.
The web site includes extensive online resources, including daily HIV/AIDS
news headlines provided by Kaiser
Network, a resource guide on HIV/AIDS and STDs, and links to the CDC’s
national HIV testing database, offering the location of local testing centers
around the nation.
This information is from the Henry
J. Kaiser Family Foundation's electronic list. A daily
news summary report on developments in HIV/AIDS is available, the Foundation’s
free health information service. Visit the web
site to subscribe to the electronic list. If you have questions, email.

MedEffect Online Consultation
Health Canada's Marketed Health Products Directorate (MHPD)
is developing MedEffect (MedEffet in French). MedEffect's goal is to provide
centralized access to new safety information about marketed health products
in an easy to find, easy to remember location. It also aims to make it
as simple and efficient as possible for health professionals and consumers
to complete and file adverse reaction reports. Finally, it will help build
awareness about the importance of submitting adverse reaction reports to
help identify and communicate potential risks associated with certain drugs
or health products. MedEffect will serve Canadian health professionals,
consumers/patients and the general public. It will reside on the new Health
Canada Web site scheduled to launch later this summer.
MedEffect developers would like to obtain your feedback
on the proposed MedEffect website, as well as on how the MedEffect program
should evolve over time. Understanding the needs and priorities of potential
MedEffect users is key to helping them make MedEffect as effective and
relevant as it can be. The MedEffect online consultation was open
from June 9 to July 29, 2005. For questions regarding the MedEffect online
consultation email.
The bilingual online consultation website is available
at two web sites: One
and Two.

The Summer 2005 HIV Nutrition Update Newszine is now available.
Subscribers
can view the issue using their assigned username and password.
Articles in this issue highlight the need for health care
professionals to learn about the use of herbs (botanicals) and other dietary
supplements. As noted by Subhuti Dharmananda, PhD and Sharon Herr, RD the
use of these substances continues despite the development of highly active
antiretroviral therapy (HAART). Dr. Subhuti Dharmananda's article, "HIV
Drugs and Herb Interactions" offers information on the use of HIV medications
and interactions with botanicals dispensed by Traditional Chinese Medicine
(TCM) practitioners. Subhuti Dharmananda, PhD is the Director and founder
of the Institute for Traditional Medicine (ITM) in Portland, Oregon. Subhuti
got his PhD in Biology from the University of California. The ITM is a
non-profit educational organization that operates two clinics in Portland,
Oregon. The clinics offer Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and other
natural health care methods in support of modern medical care. Dr. Dharmananda
is the author of numerous articles describing the practice of TCM and commonly
used medicinal materials. Most of the articles are posted for free viewing
on the ITM web site.
The author of our second feature article, "Dietary Supplements
and Blood Glucose" is Sharon Herr, RD who lives in Nassau, New York. Sharon
is a member of the American Dietetic Association (ADA) and belongs to several
ADA Dietetic Practice Groups. She is also active in the Hudson Valley Dietetic
Association. Sharon is dedicated to increasing public and professional

Mixing Food and Medications
A recent article, "When food makes medicine kill, not

several articles previously published in the HIV
ReSource Review and the HIV Nutrition Update.
The article points out how vital it is for health care workers, especially
doctor's, to be aware of what patients consume along with their medications.
HIV ReSources has published several articles over the
past few years about the risk of medication interactions between foods,
beverages, botanicals and other dietary supplements. For extensive information
on food-drug interactions, readers may visit the Food
Medication Interactions web site or telephone 800/746-2324. The grapefruit-juice
